 How do I register for NOVA Workforce classes?


Registration through the MyWorkforce online registration system is the fastest and most convenient way to register for classes. Register and pay with your VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit card.

How to Register through MyWorkforce:
  • Create a Student Profile:
    • This is a one-time process for new students and will provide you with your own personal, password-protected account.
    • You must have an e-mail address to complete the student profile.
  • Find Classes:
    • Browse all classes by category or search for a specific class. You also have the option to sort classes by location, instructor, price, and start date.
  • Add classes to your “Shopping Cart” and Checkout: (additional steps may be required for FastForward classes)
    • To select a class for registration, click “Add to Cart”. If a class is full you can add your name to the waiting list (if available).
    • Once you’ve selected your classes, click “Checkout”.
    • To “Checkout”, you must agree to the refund policy, and follow the directions to complete your registration with your credit card. You will receive an e-mail confirmation.

 How do I create a new student profile?


This is a one-time process for new students and will provide you with your own personal, password-protected account. Your profile will be your portal to your MyWorkforce account where you can check your personal information, view upcoming registrations, view financial transactions, and register for future classes. You must have an e-mail address to complete the student profile.
NOTE: It is important that this section is completed as fully as possible. This information allows us to accurately process your class registrations, financial transactions, and provides contact information for reminders and notices.
  1. Click "LOGIN/CREATE ACCOUNT" on the top of MyWorkforce.
  2. Click on the "Create New Profile". 
  3. Fill out the New Profile Form
  4. Click "Submit".
  5. You will then get an e-mail confirmation of your profile set up. Congratulations! You may now select your classes and complete your registration.
IMPORTANT: This registration system (MyWorkforce) is for courses offered through NOVA Workforce and is not linked to MyNOVA. A separate profile is required. If you need to edit your profile, you may do so after logging in. Please provide all of the requested information so that we can uniquely identify you and provide complete information and services. If you already have a NOVA Student ID number (also called EMPLID or SIS ID), use the same number when creating your MyWorkforce profile. Do not create a duplicate ID number.

 Do I have to pay when I register for a class?


Yes. NOVA Workforce class fees are due at the time of registration. Payment plans may not be used for non-credit tuition. Attending without payment or auditing classes is not allowed. Third-Party Payment options are available.

There are multiple ways to pay for classes:
  • Cash and check payments with no fee can be made at the Annandale Campus Business Offices only.
  • E-check payments with no fee may be completed online.
  • Credit/debit cards (American Express, MasterCard or Visa) with a non-refundable service fee may be completed online.
Please note: Credit/Debit card payments (with American Express, MasterCard or Visa logos on them) are assessed a 2.8% non-refundable service fee by Nelnet Business Solutions. This service fee is non-refundable. Payments must be made from a U.S. bank or affiliate.

 Do I have to register online or use my credit card?


Registering online and paying by credit card or e-check is the fastest and most convenient way. If you prefer, you may also register by mail or in person. Complete the registration form and enclose a check or money order payable to NVCC. Visit any of our Workforce office (Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, or Woodbridge) during office hours to register. Cash or check payments (exact amount) are only accepted at the Annandale campus Business Office. Please note: Credit/Debit card payments (American Express, MasterCard or Visa) are assessed a 2.8% non-refundable service fee by Nelnet Business Solutions. This service fee is non-refundable. Payments must be made from a U.S. bank or affiliate.

 Refund Process-related FAQs

What is the tuition refund deadline?
All refund requests must be made in writing and emailed to wddrefunds@nvcc.edu. If your refund request is made within the refund deadline, a full tuition refund will be issued. 
 
If the college cancels your class, you will receive a full-tuition refund or given the option to switch to a different class.  
 
Standard Refund Process: Email your request to wddrefunds@nvcc.edu at least 4 calendar days prior to the first class session.

ACLI – ESL Courses only: Email your request to wddrefunds@nvcc.edu within 7 calendar days after the first class session.  
Failure to attend: If you are not in class by the refund deadline and have not contacted us, you may be dropped from your class without a refund. If you miss 20% of the class without ever attending, you will be withdrawn without a refund.
 
Veterans Refund Process (Veterans using their Benefits): In the event that a veteran, spouse of a veteran, surviving spouse or child of a veteran is using their veterans’ benefits to attend school with us and that person fails to enter the course or withdrawals or is discontinued at any time prior to the completion of the course, the unused portion of the tuition and/or fees paid by the person shall be refunded. The exact amount of the refund will be determined based on the ratio of the number of days of instruction the person completed to the total number of instructional days in the course. (Example: A person attends 5 days of instruction out of 20 total instructional days. The person has completed 25% of the class. Therefore, the person would receive a refund of 75% of the total tuition.) All refunds will be made within 30 days. Email your refund request to wddrefunds@nvcc.edu
 
How do I obtain my refund?
If you paid by credit card, the refund will be credited to your card. All other refunds will be issued in the form of a check and will be made payable to the student, regardless of who paid the tuition and fees. The refund check will be sent from Richmond to the student's mailing address within 4 weeks after the check payment has cleared. Please make sure your mailing address is correct in your MyWorkforce account. Note: If you paid by credit card, but your enrollment is adjusted (switched to a different class), the refund will be issued as a check and mailed to the student.
 
Non-refundable fees: A 2.8% non-refundable credit card service fee is assessed by Nelnet Business Solutions for Credit/Debit card payments (American Express, MasterCard or Visa). Consumable materials (books, access codes, exam vouchers) that are part of the course tuition are non-refundable if a refund exception is approved on or after the first day of class. These fees are noted in specific course descriptions.
 
How do I switch to a different class?
If you would like to switch into a different class, send your request to wddrefunds@nvcc.edu at least 4 calendar days prior to the first class session.
 
Can I request an exception to the Refund Process?
You may request an exception to the NOVA Workforce Refund Process for one of these special circumstances:
  • Medical emergency affecting the student or immediate family members (mother, father, legal guardian, sister, brother, spouse, child, or grandparent).
  • Death of student or immediate family members (mother, father, legal guardian, sister, brother, spouse, child, or grandparent).
  • National emergency or mobilization declared by the President of the United States and in accordance with Section 23-9.6.2 of the Code of Virginia.
  • Administrative error of the College.
  • Extreme financial hardship on the part of the student.
Refunds that are approved after the refund deadline may be prorated.
No refunds are issued for consumable materials (books, access codes, exam vouchers) that are part of the course tuition if refunds occur on or after the first day of classes.

 How do I print my receipt or transcript? 


To print a receipt for any classes, just sign in and select "My Transactions" from the menu bar and locate the class. Under "Action", select "Print View" and print your receipt. To print a current “unofficial” transcript of classes, select "My Transcript" from the menu bar. In the upper left corner is an export link, select the format you would like and print.

 How do I update my profile? 


You may edit or update your student profile at any time. After signing in, access the link entitled “My Profile” to change any of the information. Click “Edit” at the bottom of the page. You may then edit any of the profile fields. When you are finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Submit”.

 What if I forget my username or password?


If you forgot your username or password please click the “Forgot Username” or Forgot Password link to the right of username/password box on the “LOGIN” page. The links will take you to a username or password request form page. You must enter your e-mail address and then type your answer to your Identity Verification Question. Then an e-mail will be sent to you.  The link to reset your password will expire in 24 hours.

 When do classes start?


NOVA Workforce classes can start at any time. We have great flexibility and offer many start dates for classes.

 If a class is full, can I put myself on a waiting list?


Yes, if you would like to put yourself on a waiting list you may, and if and when space becomes available a staff member will contact you to see if you are still interested in taking the class and give you further instruction on how to register. Being on a waitlist does not ensure that you will get into the class. It is not a registration in the class.
Important for F1 visa students: Being on the waitlist is not the same as registering for the class. You must be enrolled full-time and start classes when the semester begins. Being on the waitlist does not count as full-time enrollment. If you need additional advising, please stop by or call the ACLI office.

 What if I want my organization to pay for my classes (Third Party Payment)? 


If your tuition is being paid by a third party (employer, government agency, foreign embassy), submit a purchase/training order or letter of authorization with your registration. See Third-Party Tuition Assistance - Handout for more information. You can submit these forms by email to NOVAWorkforceAnswers@nvcc.edu.


You are responsible for full tuition payment if the third party does not pay. You cannot register using one form of payment and switch to third-party payment at a later date.

 How will I know if I got into a class? 


When you self-register, after completing your online payment, you are registered and will receive a class confirmation and transaction receipt via e-mail. If you register in person or by mail and you include an e-mail address, you will receive an e-mail confirmation and transaction receipt once your registration is processed.  If you do not provide an e-mail address, we do not send a confirmation by mail. You can confirm your registration by calling 703-503-6300 or by e-mailing NOVAWorkforceAnswers@nvcc.edu.

 Do I need books?


All required and optional textbooks are listed in the course description and your class confirmation email. Books are available at the campus bookstore where the course is being held. You may also purchase your textbooks online at www.nvcc.bncollege.com/. ACLI books are listed on the Student Resources webpage.  What is FastForward (also known as Workforce Credentials Grant/WCG)?


FastForward is a short-term workforce credential program to train Virginians for top, in-demand jobs across the Commonwealth. The State of Virginia is offsetting the tuition on select workforce training programs at community colleges by 66% (up to $4,000). The FastForward program is funded by the Virginia General Assembly to encourage the attainment of high-demand workforce credentials by underwriting the cost of approved credential preparation programs for Virginia residents who meet Virginia domicile requirements. You are required to pay one-third of the cost of the program with the explicit expectation that you will seek and obtain the related credentials identified for your program of choice. Failure to complete the class will result in your financial obligation to pay an additional one-third of the cost of the program back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Additional financial assistance options - currently FANTIC and G3 - are available to qualified applicants to cover the cost of the first one-third (student portion).

What is Expected of FastForward participants?
Participants in FastForward programs are expected to attend class regularly, satisfactorily complete any requirements set by the instructor and/or program, and sit for the Industry Credential exam. Attendance requirements vary by program and are listed in the course description.  
For courses where the Industry Credential exam is not offered at the end of the course, participants have 30 calendar days from the end of the in-class program to sit for the exam.


How to Qualify for FastForward?
To qualify for FastForward subsidized tuition, you must meet the Virginia domicile requirements. Virginia "domicile" means you have lived in Virginia and intended to stay here indefinitely for at least one year prior to the date of application. You must be eligible to receive state funding. A domicile determination form will be part of your registration process.
 
  1. Create a MyWorkforce student profile (new students only).
  2. Complete all prerequisites based on the program of your choice. Prerequisites are listed in the course description. 
  3. Register and pay for your course. The FastForward agreement (PDF preview) and domicile form will be part of your registration process. If you are domiciled in Virginia, your tuition will be discounted. Tuition payment is due at the time of registration.
Important:
Funds for FastForward programs (Workforce Credential Grant) are limited. Funds and space availability are on a first-come-first-served basis.

 What is FANTIC?


Financial Assistance for Non-Credit Industry Credentials (FANTIC) provides funding to students demonstrating the required financial need who desire to enroll in an approved FastForward training program leading to the attainment of an industry-recognized credential or licensure and are not eligible for other funding grants or financial assistance. Applicants will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. This financial assistance program will pay for the student’s cost (one-third of total tuition) of the FastForward program. Failure to complete the class will result in the student’s financial obligation to pay one-third of the program's total cost back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Funding for this program is limited. If a student fails to pass the credential testing, then the student is responsible for paying for any additional testing he/she wishes to attempt. Limited retake vouchers may be available for eligible students. The student is expected to report (with verification) to NOVA Workforce when they successfully pass the credential exam. Learn more.

How to Qualify for FANTIC or G3?
To qualify for FANTIC or G3 you must meet the Virginia domicile requirements. Virginia "domicile" means you have lived in Virginia and intended to stay here indefinitely for at least one year prior to the date of application.   1. Demonstrate financial need based on household income
    a. Currently receiving SNAP or TANF benefits, OR
    b. Current household-adjusted gross income falls at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. See FANTIC application for reference chart.
  2. Complete all prerequisites based on the program of your choice. Prerequisites are listed in the course description. 
  3. Carefully read the FANTIC Application Packet
  4. Gather all required documents as outlined in the application packet. 
  5. Complete the FANTIC Application Form online, including the Memorandum of Understanding, and upload your documents. Applications should be submitted at least two weeks before the class starting date. Completing the application does not guarantee qualification for FANTIC or G3.
  6. Register for your course. Course registration information will be provided to qualified FANTIC or G3 applicants.

 Are all NOVA Workforce classes held on campus?



Many of NOVA's classes are held at off-campus locations and online. Please see the class location information in each course description and your class confirmation email.

 Do I need a parking permit?


Parking on all NOVA campuses is free on weekends and weekdays after 3:45 pm in B lots and Hourly Parking area. All other times you must have a parking permit. Where a garage or hourly parking pay stations are available students may park for $2 per hour. Students may also purchase a semester parking permit online at https://www.nvcc.edu/student-resources/parking/index.html or directly from the Parking Services Office on any campus.
 
No parking permits are needed at off-campus locations. Follow signs for NOVA student parking at off-campus locations (if applicable).

 Are classes cancelled when there is low enrollment?


In most cases, we require a minimum number of students for a class to run. You will be notified by e-mail or phone if your class is cancelled. NOVA Workforce reserves the right to cancel classes with insufficient enrollment. If we have to cancel your class, you can request a full refund of your tuition or transfer to another course, space permitting.

 What is your process for Senior Citizen enrollments?


The Virginia Senior Citizens Higher Education Act of 1974 and amendments allow senior citizens to take courses at no charge under certain circumstances. Before the beginning of the semester in which you wish to enroll, you must have (1) reached the age of sixty and (2) had legal domicile in Virginia for one year. Tuition-paying students are accommodated in courses before senior citizens are enrolled. If you apply for free tuition AFTER you register and pay for a course, you are not eligible for a refund for that course. You are required to meet all prerequisites and pay for course materials such as books, supplies, and exam vouchers. The College reserves the right to cancel any course, and you are limited to three tuition-free courses per semester.

Enrollment in FastForward Programs:
FastForward and FANTIC financial assistance cannot be used in conjunction with the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver. Students using the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver may enroll in FastForward programs but will be required to pay for materials and certification exams. All students in FastForward programs are expected to sit for the industry credential exam at the end of the program.

If you wish to take a NOVA Workforce course, you must first create a MyWorkforce profile online (new students only). Next, complete the Senior Citizen Certification of Eligibility for Free Tuition form, and email it to NOVAWorkforceAnswers@nvcc.edu. A new form must be completed each semester. Once the necessary paperwork is on file, you must call 703-503-6300 to determine if space is available and the course is still open. For courses that begin in the morning or afternoon, you must call between 2:00 and 4:00 pm the day prior to the course start date; for evening courses, you must call between 2:00 and 4:00 pm the day the course begins. A class confirmation receipt is required to attend class. To guarantee a place in a course, payment is required.

 Are classes accessible to students with disabilities?

 What if there is inclement weather, where can I find out class cancellation information? 


Closures: If NOVA is closed, all classes and activities are cancelled, including non-credit NOVA Workforce classes and seminars. This also applies to classes held at off-campus sites (such as Signal Hill and the Reston Center). If your class is scheduled at a non-NOVA location, we will still observe the NOVA emergency plans

Delayed Openings: If NOVA opens late due to bad weather, your NOVA Workforce class could be impacted. 
  • NOVA opens at 11 a.m. for in-person services and courses. Services are not offered in-person or remotely until the college opens.
  • In-person classes due to begin before the college opening are cancelled.
  • In-person classes due to begin after the college opening are held as scheduled.
  • All online courses continue as scheduled.
  • All services offered at off-campus locations, such as military bases, are closed until the college opens.
Early or Evening Closings: If NOVA cancels evening classes and activities, all Workforce classes scheduled for that evening are cancelled. 

You can receive emergency and college closing messages on your mobile device by signing up for NovaAlert.

Please understand that we make decisions about cancelling classes or restricting business operations very carefully, with full consideration of all available information about weather predictions, road conditions, and safety. In the event your class is cancelled, a Workforce staff member will contact you the next business day the college is open and confirm plans for classes that may have been cancelled or rescheduled. You can check on the status of college openings at www.nvcc.edu.

  • Ask! A verbal request is often all it takes. An e-mail is even better.

  • Emphasize the convenience. Why go out of town when quality training is available right here, including online courses?
  • Compare the price! Your supervisor will be pleased to know that he/she is paying less and getting a lot.

 What is a CEU?


CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit. CEUs are earned for participation in non-credit continuing education experiences. Non-credit courses are offered by NOVA Workforce. (Please do not confuse "non-credit" with "audit" of courses in NOVA's regular academic credit program.)
The Continuing Education Unit was designed as a uniform unit of measurement to facilitate the accumulation and exchange of standardized information about individual participation in non-credit continuing education. Students establish a permanent record of non-credit experiences that may be used to enhance their opportunities for personal and professional development.
One Continuing Education Unit is defined as:
  • Ten Contact Hours of Participation...
  • In an Organized Continuing Education Experience...
  • Under Responsible Sponsorship...
  • Capable Direction...
  • And Qualified Instruction
You earn CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for many NOVA Workforce courses. Registered Workforce students must attend 90% of all scheduled class hours, in addition to completing any other requirements set by the instructor and/or program, in order to be awarded CEUs and a Certificate of Completion. You may request a Certificate of Completion for any course you have passed successfully by emailing NOVAWorkforceAnswers@nvcc.edu.

 What is the Privacy Policy?


It is the policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia that agencies of the Commonwealth will collect and retain personal information about citizens only to the extent necessary to provide the service or benefit desired; collect only appropriate information; provide the reason the information is collected so that citizens shall understand that reason clearly and enable citizens to examine their personal record, which is maintained by a public body.

The Northern Virginia Community College Website:

 
  1. May collect one or more of the following pieces of personal information: your email address, name, social security number, date of birth, phone number or course assignments. Any of this information is collected to meet your specific online requests. If you choose not to provide this personal information, you will be unable to receive some of the services this website offers.
  2. Collects your IP address, pages browsed, and date and time of your visit. This information is used for internal College statistical purposes only.
  3. Uses temporary cookies (i.e., files which may contain a variety of information) on some Web pages for screen colors and graphics or to track movement on the site, but will not place them permanently on your hard drive. When you exit the website, the file is automatically removed.
  4. May link to other websites that may or may not collect data that does not have a relationship to the College through using cookies. You should check for a policy on the linked to Web page.
