Course Description:
Instructional Mode: Learn on Campus: In Person
This
advanced-level course builds on foundational fiber-optic knowledge and provides students with the hands-on skills required for outside plant (OSP) fiber installation and maintenance. The course begins with a detailed review of fiber optic theory, terminology, and cable design, including an overview of various fiber types, equipment, and industry-standard procedures.
Students will progress to practical applications, learning to prepare, route, and manage both indoor and outdoor cabling using splice closures, patch panels, and splice trays. The curriculum emphasizes single-fiber and ribbon splicing techniques using industry-standard equipment.
Participants will gain experience in testing and troubleshooting live optical links, setting up and calibrating an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), and performing cable acceptance testing. Students will also learn how to measure optical return loss (ORL) and reflectance using advanced testing methods.
By the end of the course, participants will have developed the technical proficiency and confidence necessary to install, test, and maintain OSP fiber optic networks and will be fully prepared to sit for the
ETA Fiber Optic Technician – Outside Plant (FOT-OSP) certification exam.
