Learn@Home: Online, on your own time
10+-hour asynchronous training program that prepares Nurses (LPN or RN) or Pharmacists eligible by Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) requirements, to teach in a Medication Aide Training program for unlicensed personnel to administer medications in Assisted Living Facilities. This course uses a variety of instructional assignments and technology-based tools to demonstrate understanding and ability to apply course objectives as well as a post-course examination in compliance with Virginia Administrative Code 18VAC90-60-50. Requirements for instructional personnel of the  Regulations Governing the Registration of Medication Aides. 

Who is eligible:
  • Licensed registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or pharmacists (PharmD) who, consistent with provisions of the Drug Control Act (§ 54.1-3400 et seq. of the Code of Virginia), are authorized to administer or dispense drugs and have at least three years of experience in such practice.
  • RNs, LPNs and Pharmacists must hold a current, active, unrestricted license or a multistate licensure privilege

10+ Hours of coursework in:
  • Understanding basic principles of adult learning.
  • Application of adaptive teaching methods and tools for adult learners.
  • Creating engaging lesson plans and skills labs.
  • Effective presentation skills
  • Evaluation strategies and measurement tools for assessing student learning outcomes.
  • Review of current regulations for Registered Medication Aides (RMA) and Medication Aide education programs.
  • Review of the board-approved Medication Aide (68-hour) curriculum content.
  • An additional section is provided for NOVA employees only (not required for course completion for non-NOVA faculty)
 
A certificate of completion will be provided to meet the requirements of the VBON Medication Aide Instructor training for approval to teach in a VBON-accredited, 68-hour Medication Aide program.

This class will be held asynchronously, online with Instructional support via Zoom as needed, and is open for rolling admission from July 2, 2026 to August 1, 2026. Students are encouraged to complete training within 2 weeks of class registration but no later than August 6, 2026.
