Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate Program

 
NOVA Workforce’s TESOL Certificate Program prepares you to teach English as a second or foreign language by combining language acquisition theory with guided teaching practice from experienced instructors with advanced degrees.

To earn a TESOL Certificate from NOVA Workforce, participants must complete TESOL 1, TESOL 2, and TESOL 3:
  • TESOL 1 & TESOL 2: Teaching methodology workshops and Practicum 1
  • TESOL 3: Practicum 2 and a Teaching Portfolio
 

TESOL 2

Prerequisite: Completion of TESOL 1. 
Explore intercultural communication issues and common English pronunciation issues. Learn to adapt existing materials to make them more communicative, and use technology to increase engagement and student development in ESL. Complete Practicum 1: 10 hours of supervised ESL teaching at NOVA Workforce’s American Culture & Language Institute.

These workshops are to be taken after successfully completing TESOL 1.

  • TESOL 2-7:  TESOL Practicum 1 (4070084)

Learn how to incorporate topics related to cultural diversity and American culture in skills-based ESL classes.    
Learn when and how to utilize technology in the task-based format to supplement existing ESL textbooks.  
Learn how to differentiate between levels of literacy and use task-based teaching to effectively teach students who are at a zero proficiency level.
Learn effective classroom management techniques, including establishing goals and behavior norms and creating a positive classroom environment.
Learn how to make existing textbook materials utlize a task-based structure and address students' specific needs.
